Leta 1970, na začetku desetletja, se je 18. 3. 1970 v klubu poslancev na ustanovnem občnem zboru zbralo 33 pooblaščenih predstavnikov* ter ustanovilo SMS s sedežem v takratnem Muzeju ljudske revolucije Slovenije, Celovška cesta 23 (danes Muzej novejše in sodobne zgodovine Slovenije). Zapisali so namen skupnosti, in sicer da povezani muzeji pospešujejo svojo dejavnost, medsebojno sodelujejo in obravnavajo vprašanja, ki so skupnega pomena. Prvi predsednik je bil takratni direktor »sedežnega muzeja« Radko Polič (1919—1988), predsedstvo pa so sestavljali podpredsednik Marjan Vidmar (1923—2011), ravnatelj Tehniškega muzeja Slovenije, ter člani Zoran Kržišnik (1920—2008), ravnatelj Moderne galerije v Ljubljani, Branko Marušič (1938—), ravnatelj Goriškega muzeja v Novi Gorici, in dr. Sergej Vrišer (1920—2004), ravnatelj Pokrajinskega muzeja v Mariboru.
Tako kot ob ustanovitvi članice SMS povezuje skupni interes reševanja izbranih poklicnih in statusnih vprašanj, pri čemer s sekcijami skrbijo za strokovno rast zaposlenih, z različnimi dogodki, kot sta Poletna muzejska noč ter spletna akcija #naprejvpreteklost, pa predstavlja in promovira slovenske muzeje in galerije ter prek njih celotno kulturno in naravno dediščino, za katero skrbijo.
SMS je tesno vpeta v evropski prostor in je aktivna članica NEMO – Mreže evropskih muzejskih organizacije (Network of European Museum Organisations), kjer sooblikuje evropsko muzejsko krajino in aktualne teme, kot so odziv na podnebne spremembe, trajnostni razvoj, družbeni pomen in odgovornost muzejev, neodvisnost …

Slovenian Museum Association – 55 Years in the Service of Our Heritage
At the beginning of the 1970s, on 18 March 1970 to be exact, 33 accredited representatives gathered at the inaugural general assembly in the deputies’ club to establish the Slovenian Museum Association with the seat in the then Museum of the People’s Revolution of Slovenia, Celovška cesta 23 (the present-day National Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia). They set down the aim of the association, i.e. the associated museums would promote their activities, collaborate with one another and address issues of common interest. The first chair was the then director of the museum that housed the association’s seat Radko Polič (1919–1988) and the governing board consisted of the vice-chair Marjan Vidmar (1923–2011), director of the Technical Museum of Slovenia, and members Zoran Kržišnik (1920–2008), director of the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana, Branko Marušič (1938–), director of the Goriška Museum in Nova Gorica, and Dr Sergej Vrišer (1920–2004), director of the Maribor Regional Museum.
Much like they were back in the day, when the association was founded, the association’s members are still united through their shared commitment to dealing with selected professional and status-related matters. To this end, the association’s sections take care of the employees’ professional growth and various events, such as the Summer Museum Night and the online campaign #forwardintothepast, present and promote Slovenian museums and galleries, and thus also the entire cultural and natural heritage under their care.
The association is closely bound to the European area and is an active member of NEMO – Network of European Museum Organisations, as part of which it co-shapes the European museum landscape and addresses various burning issues, such as the response to climate change, sustainable development, the social significance and responsibility of museums, independence etc.
